It is Christmas Day, and soon all the carols will end for 10 months or so. Some people will be glad, and some will be sad to hear them go. I enjoy Christmas carols, both the secular songs about Rudolph or Santa, and especially the ones that honor the birth of our Savior Jesus. My favorites are probably Silent Night, especially during a Christmas Eve candlelight service, and Oh Holy Night. I wish I could hit that note at the end, “Oh Night, Divine…” But, since I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, that will never happen.
There is one song that has special meaning to me, The Little Drummer Boy. Written and composed in 1941 by Katherine Kennicott Davis, is has been covered countless times, perhaps most famously by Bing Crosby and David Bowie, blending the song with Peace On Earth. Sadly, shortly after the duo recorded the song for a TV special on CBS in the US, Mr. Crosby died, before the show aired on November 30, 1977.
The words to the song, I think, can be an analogy, or a metaphor or a simile. Not sure which one really applies, or if it was the intent of Davis.
I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give our King
Pa rum pum pum pum
When we come to Christ, we bring nothing, nothing that’s fitting to bring our Savior.
Mary nodded
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum
The Bible mentions no drummer boy who witnessed the birth of Christ, but anything is possible. Mary could have given a nod of approval at the boy playing his drum for Jesus. Having an ox and lamb keep musical time is no problem for the God of miracles having a Child born to a virgin.
Then He smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
Then Jesus smiles at the boy who gave all he had. Sort of like the poor widow who gave all she had .
Yes, the song is fiction, but the miracle of Christ birth is not. He came to earth to save us from hell, Christians today know that. The wise men knew that. Mary and Joseph knew that. And anyone who came to visit the Christ child, knew that too. Do you? You can.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
